Organic Colour Systems: What Makes It Different

Organic Colour Systems is one of two color lines we work with at Rooted. It's a UK-made professional line, one of the earliest premium ammonia-free colors on the market, and it behaves differently enough from conventional color to be worth explaining.

It's a gel, not a cream. Most hair color is a thick, opaque cream. OCS is a gel — more translucent, which means it deposits with a softer, more natural-looking result rather than the flat, painted-on density conventional color can leave. It's a fair trade: gel is a looser consistency to work with, but the finish reads more like hair and less like dye.

The formulation is gentle by design. OCS colors are free from ammonia, resorcinol, naphthol, and silicone, formulated with the lowest possible levels of color pigment to reduce the risk of reaction and irritation while still producing permanent results (OCS). It also works at a lower pH than traditional color — meaning the cuticle opens more gently, with less structural disruption each service. That said, this is still permanent hair color, and still chemistry. Lower pH reduces harshness; it doesn't eliminate it.

It fades cleanly. How a color fades matters as much as how it looks on day one. OCS softens gradually and evenly rather than degrading into something muddy or unrecognizable. Depending on the shade and your hair, you may see some warmth come through as it fades — but the result stays coherent and true to what it started as. That's the difference between a fade you can build on at your next appointment and one you have to correct.

The reds are excellent. Red is the hardest color family to execute and the fastest to fade — the pigment molecules are larger and wash out more readily. OCS's coppers, auburns, and true reds hold their depth rather than flattening out.

One line covers every level of commitment. Within a single line, we can work across temporary, semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and permanent without switching brands. That means you can test a shade semi-permanently before committing, step down from permanent while growing color out, or do something temporary for an event — all in the same tone family, with predictable results. Mixing brands across permanence levels is where unpredictable fade behavior creeps in.

The company holds up. OCS is a certified B Corp — independently assessed on social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency (OCS) — independently owned, and formulated, produced, and packaged at its headquarters in the south of England. It also smells good, which sounds trivial until you consider that a stylist breathes it every working day.

One thing it needs from you: clean-ish hair. Because OCS is gentle, it doesn't force its way through obstacles the way conventional color does. Heavy oil, dry shampoo, or product buildup can interfere with how evenly color deposits. Not freshly washed on your way out the door, but not several days of buildup either — washed within the last day or so is ideal.

OCS isn't right for every head of hair, which is why we don't carry only one line. Hair history, condition, and individual sensitivities all factor into which system a stylist reaches for. But when the goal is gentle chemistry, a fade that stays true, and reliable red, it's usually the answer.
